2018 Beijing (Taihu) Shadow Puppet Art Week adheres to the exhibition concept of contemporary theater art, introduces the popular “immersive” experience, and presents traditional intangible cultural heritage shadow puppet shows in multiple forms.
The main venue of the art week is Taihu Wetland Park. During the performance period, Taihu Park will be transformed into a natural stage scene. The sparkling garden lake and the tent theater built in the open air will become an excellent “immersive” space.
Consistent with the ecological and energy-saving features of Taihu Park using environmentally friendly reclaimed water to build lakes, this year’s art week takes “change” as the outdoor theme, featuring story series, new object installations, and environmental tents on-site transformation. The perfect integration of the environment, and the theme of the new era of harmonious coexistence between man and nature are reflected in every detail.
British environmental sculptor Mike Hartler was invited to serve as the outdoor environmental designer of the main venue, responsible for a series of environmental design work for the art festival, from creativity, design to scenery. The fish door device at the movable entrance, from the design, material selection to the completion of the construction, as well as the details of the scales of the fish body, are all manually completed by Mike. The installation is also based on the abandoned structure in the garden, on which are two large fish that seem to be about to rise, with their mouths facing each other, and the guide puppet sits on one of the fish, yelling nursery rhymes to the small speakers, leading The audience starts this fantasy journey full of creativity.
13 professional shadow puppet troupes at home and abroad are invited to participate in this art week, and they will bring nearly 70 shadow puppet performances. The two tents A and B in Taihu Park are used as a performance theater for foreign puppet dramas, tent C is mainly used for performances of domestic repertoires, and the other tent is used for visual exhibitions of puppetry. During the Golden Week period, three tent theaters that can accommodate 200 people will start performances at the same time.
